Leo Victor Amunson, p 89

Leo Victor Amunson, son of Olaf and Hanora (Clemon) Amunson was born on May 5, 1918 on the farm east of Soldier, Iowa, in Monona County, Soldier Township. He was baptized and confirmed in the Norwegian Lutheran Church at Soldier and attended country schools through eighth grade and Soldier High School graduating in 1937. He helped his father on the farm as well as a hired man for the farmers around the area. On May 7, 1941 he was called into the United States Army and took his boot training in Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri and on January 20, 1942 was sent overseas. He was sent to Australia, then to New Guinea, and later to Biak Island, where he was wounded by a land mine and died in a hospital July 28, 1944. A memorial service was held at the Lutheran Church, and in July of 1948 his body was sent home and a burial service was held at the Soldier Lutheran Church, July 6, 1948.

Leo was one of the finest young men of his community. His character and ideals being second to none. He was ambitious and worked hard and skillful at whatever he undertook. He was faithful to his church and attended Luther League before entering the Service. His chaplain spoke of him as a great and true comrade.

Lee lived with his parents until he went to the service of his country. He had five brothers, Merrill, Lowell, Kermit, Clifferd, and Milton; and four sisters, Verona, Evelyn, Elaine and Loreen. Memories of him will always be with us.
