MRS. MARY FEDSON, FORMER RESIDENT SUCCUMBS AT AGE 84
Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday afternoon from the Jordan mortuary at Austin, Minnesota, for Mrs. Mary Fedson, 84 years of age, who died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Adel Tollefson, at Austin, Minnesota, Saturday morning, April 15. Interment was in the St. Ansgar, Iowa cemetery.
Mary M. Paulson was born in Denmark, May 3, 1855. She was baptized in infancy and confirmed at an early age in the Lutheran church. She came with her family to America when a girl of 14 and settled near St. Ansgar, Iowa where she grew to womanhood. On October 19, 1876, she was married to Christian Fedson.
Five children were born to Mr. & Mrs. Fedson, three of whom survive: Mrs. Johanna Kirkman of Ames, Iowa; Nels E. Fedson of Lyle, Minnesota; and Mrs. Adel Tollefson of Austin, Minnesota.
Ten years after their marriage, Mr. Fedson returned to Denmark taking the entire family with him. There the youngest son, Adolph, died at the age of 4 and the oldest son, Anders, contracted a cold on the return trip and died 2 weeks after they returned home. Mr. Fedson died in a railroad accident enroute to Chicago in 1902. Mr. & Mrs. Fedson had celebrated their silver wedding anniversary shortly before the tragic death.
Mrs. Fedson continued to live in St. Ansgar until 16 years ago when she went to Austin to make her home with her daughter. Twelve years ago she fell, breaking her hip, an accident which put an end to the marked activity of her life. Up to this time, she had been blessed with health and vitality which enabled her to work, to travel and enjoy the pleasures and fullness of life.
But through sorrow, loss and the handicap of her own lameness, she was able to remember the health and active joys of other years and she never complained. It was these unselfish qualities which made her greatly beloved not only by her children, but by all who came in contact with her.
She loved to travel, had crossed the ocean several times and made many trips to California. She loved nature and was especially fond of flowers. She loved people, the old, the young and little children. She understood their problems and was able to give counsel and sympathy. Many who came to her to offer her comfort in time of trouble went away inspired and enthused by her gallant spirit, her cheer and courage. She was an extensive reader of books and current literature and few were better informed on world and national events than she. Her death rounded out more than four score years of useful and beautiful life. She was ill a week with the flu.
Among those from here who attended the funeral were Mrs. H. B. Hanson, Miss Anna Olsen, Dr. R. W. Rogers, Mrs. Nina Jackson, Nellie Reierson, Mr. & Mrs. S. A. Kleinwort, Mrs. George Tollefson, Luther Tollefson, Mr. & Mrs. J.P.Lund, Justin Lund, and Mr. & Mrs. J. P. Hansen of Otranto.
