DIED - At his residence, in Osage, Mitchell Co., Iowa, on Monday November 11th, 1872, Rev. John Gould, aged 65 years and 4 months.

The announcement given above will carry sorrow to many hearts in this portion of the state, where the subject of it was well known as "Elder Gould".

He was a native of Vermont. Early in life he became a member of the M.E. Church and was educated for the ministry. In 1863 he was appointed Presiding Elder of the McGregor district and during the four years of his eldership served the church faithfully.

Prior to his appointment as elder of this district he held the same relation to the Cedar Rapids district also for four years. At the expiration of his term of elder [illegible] over the McGregor district he superanuated from ministerial [illegible] and became a member of the firm of Scott & Gould in this city, this business [illegible] a short time previous to his removal from our city, which occurred in the spring of 1871, when he engaged in mercantile business with his son-in-law, Mr. George Evans, at Osage.

As a preacher Elder Gould had few equals, he was clear in his arguments and sound in his reasonings, was a very pleasant speaker and had a ready, and at times eloquent, flow of language.

As a neighbor the deceased will long be remembered as being kind and obliging to all who had the pleasure of being acquainted with him. Those among whom he has resided will often think of the many acts of kindness performed by him while he was among us and we know what we say when we assert that his memory will long be held sacred by his some time neighbors in this city.

Mr. Gould was an active member of the Masonic Order and stood high in the estimation of his brethren. We understand that he was one of the "charter members" of the Honorous Commandry in this city.

Thus another of the earnest workers in the cause of religion and temperance, of which he was a strong advocate, has been called away to receive his reward from the hands of the Master above. We can truly say that the people of this city feel as though they had lost a friend in the death of Mr. Gould, and we know that we only reflect the sentiment of the community when we offer the heartfelt sympathy of the people to the bereaved wife and family who are left to mourn his departure from this life. - McGregor TIMES
