Beverly Jane Guffey was born on April 23, 1925 to Claude T. Guffey and Anne Marie (Brown) Guffey, in Lincoln, Nebraska. In 1938 the family moved to Kansas City, MO, where Bev graduated from West Port High School.
Bev spent her summers in Stacyville where she visited her grandparents, Valentine and Ida Brown, and met Cletus Hatten. They were married by Fr. Henry Manternach at Visitation Catholic Church in Stacyville in 1943.
Cletus and Bev were part of E.P. Hatten and Sons until 1974 when E. P. Hatten passed away, at which time two of their sons took over the business. Bev was involved with the hardware store and funeral home business, doing much of the behind the scenes work.
During their retirement years they spent the winter months in Mesa, AZ enjoying sunshine and friends. Bev will always be remembered for her hospitality and for the many wonderful meals she served to family and friends.
She enjoyed having her neighbors and friends gather on her patio for companionship and cocktails on summer afternoons. She especially enjoyed playing cards and playing stock market. Bev kept in touch with all her family and was the “hub” of the family.
Bev was preceded in death by her parents, husband Cletus in 1997, and two granddaughters, Amy Michele and Elizabeth Anne Hatten.
Bev is survived by her: six children, Nick (Avis) Hatten, Edward (Karla) Hatten, Jane (Bob) Melton, Susan Hosek, Nancy Theobald, and James Hatten; 14 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; 6 great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Patricia Frizzell of Las Vegas, NV and Mary Harding of Chandler, AZ.
