Owen D. “Bud” Counsell, age 90, of Osage and formerly of New Haven, died Friday, May 11, 2018, at his home in Osage, after three years of dialysis.
A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 15, 2018, at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in New Haven with Father Mark Murphy officiating. Burial will be at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Osage. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Monday at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in New Haven with a rosary at 5:15 p.m. There will also be visitation at St. Peter’s Catholic Church one hour prior to the funeral mass on Tuesday.
Owen D. “Bud” Counsell was born January 22, 1928, on the family farm near Little Cedar, Iowa, the son of Harriet G. (Strong) and Lloyd W. Counsell, Sr. He graduated from Little Cedar High School in 1946.
On June 22, 1948, he married Mary Alice Pitzen at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Osage. They farmed and raised their family in the New Haven area. Bud was a member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church in New Haven and was a director at the Little Cedar Creamery for over 27 years.
He collected International Harvester toys and other International Harvester items. He also had a collection of over 200 caps. Bud loved farming, and especially loved spending time with his family.
Bud is survived by his wife, Mary Alice Counsell of Osage; his children, Duane Counsell of Johnston, Gary (Corky) Counsell of New Haven, Barb (Grant) Earll of Sarasota, Florida, John (Marsha) Counsell of Sheffield, and Christie (David) Radechel of Carlisle; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; brothers-in-law, Mel (Shirley) Pitzen of Marshalltown and Roger (Gin) Pitzen of Marion; and sister-in-law, Edna Pitzen of Osage.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Barbara Counsell; brothers, Lloyd (Adelaide) Counsell, Jr., Maurice (Joann) Counsell, and Bob (Alta) Counsell; and brother-in-law, Marvin Pitzen.
