Gladys Evelyn Torney was born June 2, 1902 at Rock, Mitchell, Iowa to Albert Richard Torney and Paulina Sophia Erickson, the youngest of their five children.

Found in the 1905 census living on a farm at Rock, Mitchell, Iowa.

Found in the 1910 - 1920 censuses living on a farm on the Lime Kiln Road, Cedar, Mitchell, Iowa:
1910: Albert R Torney 44, Paulina S Torney 41, Ernest A Torney 20, Jessie Torney 19, Raymond Torney 16, Gail Torney 13, Gladys Torney 7.

1915: Gladys Torney age 12.

1920: Earnest A Torney 30, Paulina Torney 50, Gail E Torney 23, Gladys E Torney 17.

Gladys married Emmett Franklin Steelman some time between 1920 and 1924 in Iowa.

The couple had one son, Merle Albert Steelman (b & d in 1925 at Hardin Co, Iowa).

Found in the 1925 census living at Providence, Hardin, Iowa: Emmeth F Stellman 22, Glayds Evelyn Stellman 22.

Gladys Steelman died on December 14, 1925 at Marshalltown, Marshall, Iowa. She was buried at the Honey Creek Cemetery, New Providence, Hardin, Iowa.
