Johan Nikolai Johnson was born February 27, 1841 at Reistad, Hamre, Hordaland, Norway to Nels N. Johnson (b January 30, 1820 Hordaland, Norway, d August 1855 Mitchell, Iowa) and Annie Nielsdatter (b February 3, 1813 Hordaland, Norway, d August 3, 1897 Lincoln, Washington), the oldest of their seven children. His younger siblings were: Martha, Nels, Martha (2nd), Torris, Anna Maria and Andreas.
Johan was baptized as "Johannes Nielsen Johnson" on March 3, 1841 at Hamre, Norway.
Johan emigrated to Columbia, Wisconsin in 1850 with his parents and four siblings, the two younger siblings were born in Wisconsin.
In 1854, the family moved west to settle on land in Cedar, Mitchell County, Iowa. Two years later (1856), the family moved to another area of land in the same county.
Found in the 1860 census at Mitchell, Mitchell, Iowa: working as a laborer, single, living with Holden Petersen Maakestad: Annie Peterson 47, John Johnson 19.
Johan married Jorand (Jane) Engebritsdatter Nelson Qvisle on August 5, 1863 at Mitchell County, Iowa.
The couple had 5 children who were all born in Cedar township, Mitchell County, Iowa:
Nicolai Johan (b October 25, 1864, d June 28, 1939 Osage, Iowa);Edward Elai (b March 2, 1869, d May 24, 1948 Springer, Colfax, New Mexico);
Ingeborg Andrine (b May 25, 1871, d November 17, 1960 Mason City, Cerro Gordo, Iowa);
Caroline ( b May 24, 1876, d March 24, 1940 Mitchell, Iowa) and
Martin J (b February 22, 1882, d December 2, 1943 Mason City, Iowa).
Johan was a farmer.

A group picture of Johan and family says he settled in Mitchell County in 1854 with the caption, John N. Johnson was born in Norway, February 27, 1841 ( shows him, wife and 5 children).
In 1850, the family emigrated to America and lived in Wisconsin four years; then moved to Mitchell County in 1854 and entered land on Section 28-98-17, Cedar Township, Mitchell County, Iowa.
In 1856, the family moved to Section 1-98-18.
John N. married Jane Nelson in 1863 and bought a farm on section 12-97-18, the site of the present village of Meroa, Iowa. Both the parties are dead in 1911, with five children surviving: Nicholai, on the home farm; Edward, in New Mexico; Isabella and Martin, in Mason City, Iowa; and Caroline, in Dakota.Johan Nikolai Johnson died January 29, 1902 at Cedar, Mitchell, Iowa and is buried at the Rock Creek Lutheran Cemetery, Meroa, Cedar, Mitchell, Iowa.
