Johannes Bernhard John​son (Senior) was born July 4, 1872 at ​Cedar, Mitchell, Iowa to​ Ole Helgesen Johnson ​and Berthe Jensdatter, the fifth of their ten children.​

He was baptized on July 28, 1872 at the Rock Creek Lutheran Church at Meroa, Cedar, Mitchell, Iowa and confirmed at same on June 2, 1889.
