Erik Olsen Haugerud was born July 25, 1827 at Haugerud, Aadalen, Buskerud, Norway to Ole Hansen Rustand Haugerud and Guri Torgrimsdatter Holte, the sixth of their seven children. His siblings were: Kari, Olia, Hans, Torgrim, Ole the Older and Ole the Younger.
Erik emigrated to Meroa, Cedar township, Mitchell County, Iowa in 1851 with family and lived at the Haugerud farm located in Meroa, just south of the Rock Creek Lutheran Church.
He moved to Australia in 1854 and worked as a gold miner.
He changed his name to Alexander Olsen in 1861 and married Christina Towers on November 17, 1875 at New Zealand.
The couple had 6 children:
Alexander Olsen (1876 - 1899);
Christina Olsen (1879 - 1947);
Jeanette Olsen (1880 - 1953);
Frances Olsen (1882 - 1952);
John Olsen (1885 - 1962);
Oleah Olsen (1885 - 1956).Alexander (Erik Haugerud) Olsen died 1888 at the Frankton hospital at Queenstown Lakes, Otago, New Zealand from pneumonia and was buried at the Queenstown Cemetery, New Zealand. No gravestone, believed to be a lost grave.
