Funeral services were held for August C. Schrader, age 82, at the First Lutheran church August 8, with the Rev. T.P. Solem in charge. Interment was in the St. Ansgar City cemetery.

August C. Schrader was born the son of Herman C. Schrader and Minnie Hepner in Germany on July 7, 1868. He came with his parents first to Canada, but thinking the country too cold, they emigrated to Iowa and settled in St. Ansgar in about 1882 when August was 14 years old.

He spent his lifetime in the community working at various types of seasonal work. On April 25, 1918 he was united in marriage to Ellen Anderson, who preceeded him in death on June 19, 1946.

Shortly after his marriage he joined the First Lutheran church. He is survived by two sisters; Mrs. August Lane of Austin and Mrs. Minnie Scott of California, also a number of nieces and nephews.

August Schrader was one of a group of young men who experienced and survived the tragic accident of April 5, 1888, when the team and wagon in which they were riding was swept down the stream at the Turtle creek crossing at the Tribbensee farm. The team of horses and four of the boys were drowned. The victims were Andrew Golberg, Isaac Lovestrum, Frank Lang and Frank Bunde. Of the nine survivers, Hovel Smith is the only one still living. The events of that day made a deep impression on the mind of Mr. Schrader and he had often retold the story as he experienced it.
