TRAIN WRECK IN STORM KILLS THREE
RELIEF ENGINE STRIKES CABOOSE AT ALTA VISTA
8 INJURED; SNOWPLOW CARAVAN LEADS AMBULANCES TO HOSPITAL.

Alta Vista – Toll of death in the storm-caused train wreck a half mile south of here Thursday afternoon had reached three Friday, and one of the eight injured was not expected to live.

A caravan of five snowplows, from New Hampton, Elma and Alta Vista succeeded in getting ambulances through to New Hampton with the injured.

WAYNE L. MILLER, 31, St. Paul, Minnesota was killed outright when a Chicago Great Western relief engine coming from Rochester, Minnesota, to aid a stalled southbound freight crashed into the freight’s caboose in the blinding snow.

PINNED IN WRECKAGE
CLYDE EASTMAN, 30, McIntire, Iowa section worker, and PAUL BUTTERFIELD, McIntire section foremen, died in the hospital at New Hampton, Iowa.

Butterfield and Eastman were standing beside the tracks at the time of the collision.

Paul Benjamin Butterfield was born April 17, 1928 in Mitchell Co., Iowa, the son of George Butterfield and Ruth Evelyn (Eastman) Butterfield.
