SCOFIELD

On Tuesday morning, August 4th, this entire community was shocked to learn that one of our citizens, F. A. Scofield, had been stricken with paralysis and was lying in an unconcious condition at his home on west Main Street.

Anxious inquiries were frequent during the week's illness which followed. . .

The message was received on Wednesday morning, August 12th, that he was gone. Frank Augustus Scofield was born October 13, 1833, at Seroon, N.Y., and died at Osage, Iowa, August 12, 1908.

He was the oldest of 12 children, only one brother, Charles Scofield, of Rock County, Wisconsin, and three sisters, Mrs. E. R. Fessenden of Osage, Iowa, Mrs. Frank McChesney, of Denver, Colorado, and Mrs. Walworth of Mitchell, South Dakota, survive him.

When Mr. Scofield was a mere boy, his father moved to Janesville, Wisconsin, and later to Indian Ford, where he lived for nearly forty years, his death occurring in 1895. Previous to his marriage Mr. Scofield taught school at Indian Ford, during the winter months.

October 29, 1861, he was united in marriage with Emily Loraine Stacy at Janesville, Wisconsin. Soon after Mr. and Mrs. Scofield removed to Cedar Falls, where he engaged in the mercantile business for four years, removing in 1865 to Mitchell, Iowa, where he formed a partnership with his brother-in-law, Milton S. Stacy. For eight years they engaged in the dry good and grovcery business in Mitchell, and continued the partnership in Osage for fifteen years under the firm name of Scofield & Stacy. In 1887, Mr. Stacy withdrew from the firm and until 1900, Mr. Scofield conducted the business alone, then disposing of his stock of good to W. W. Stacy and retiring from active business life to devote his entire attention to the care of his invalid wife.

From time to time Mr. Scofield held positions of public trust, and by his honest and upright discharge of duty won the esteem of all.

The deceased leaves a wife and three sons, Fred, Milton, Edwin John and Herbert Homer, the second son, Frank Herbert, dying in infancy.

Mr. Scofield was reared in a Christian home. Although his own mother died when he was very young, he was devotedly attached to his stepmother who was his own mother's sister. The influence of this Godly home was an inspritation to him throughout his life. In 1896, under the pastorate of Dr. Gist, he united with the Congregational church of which his wife and sons are members.

His sudden and unexpected death had brought sorrow to many hearts. . . .

The last service was held at the home Friday afternoon, conducted by Rev. H. Allen. . . .
