In 1970, he moved to Marshfield to continue his Pediatric practice at the Marshfield Clinic. Dr. Nickerson was dedicated and steadfast in providing medical care to children, his professional passion, until his retirement in 2002.

During his career, he received Board Certification in Hematology and Oncology and was a clinical researcher, publishing numerous papers on Hematology, Oncology, and Pediatrics, including ground breaking research on the effects of iron deficiency in female adolescent athletes.

Dr. Nickerson belonged to several professional organizations including the Children's Oncology Group of the Upper Midwest, the International Society of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology, and the American Academy of Pediatrics.
