Bertha (Fehrmann) Schilling 1847-1927

OBITUARY

BERTHA SCHILLING
Bertha Fehrmann was born in Coelpin, in the province of Brandenburg, Germany, Dec 24, 1847.

She was baptized in the Evangelical Lutheran church there, and on April 13, 1862, she renewed her faith by confirmation and remained a steadfast member of that church.
At the time of her death she was a member of St. James Lutheran church of this city.

At the age of 18 years, she emigrated to the United States and made her home at Jefferson, Wisconsin.

On Oct 1, 1868 at Farmington, Wisconsin, she was married to Julius Schilling and the following year they moved by prairie schooner to Mitchell County, Iowa, where they located on a farm two miles from the town of Mitchell. There they endured all of the hardships of the early pioneers.
There home was always a place of hospitality to all the newcomers to that part of the county.

From there they moved in 1875 to a farm 5 miles northeast of Plymouth where they resided until the year 1892 when they retired and moved to Plymouth.

In 1901 they moved to Mason City where they have since lived except for a short residence in Montana and another at The Dalles, Oregon.

After suffering patiently for a number of years, she passed away peacefully at her home, 624 Sixth Street northeast, on New Year's Day January 1, 1927 at 8:30 P.M.

She was always a hard worker, always willing to help some friend. She took an especial interest in her home and did everything she could for her family. She denied herself many of the comforts of life in order to help her loved ones. She was always a faithful church worker and many times in the early days when the winter blizzards would cover everything, she would walk for many miles to attend church.

She will be greatly missed by her loved ones who did everything they could for her comfort during the last years of her life.

She leaves to mourn her death, her aged husband, two daughters and two sons; Mrs. Theresa Johnson of North San Diego, Cal.; Mrs. Alfred R. Schmidt of Plymouth; Henry F., of Mason City, and Emil W., of Mason City. Two sons have preceded her in death, Adolph and Albert J. Besides these there are nineteen grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at St. James Lutheran church, the Rev. O. Mall officiated, Tuesday afternoon at 1:30 and she was laid to rest in Oakwood cemetery at Plymouth. All of the children were present except Mrs. Johnson. The six grandsons acted as pallbearers.
