SCHILLING, WAR VETERAN, DIES

Pioneer Resident of Cerro Gordo County Succumbs at Daughters Home.

Julius Schilling, 84, Civil war veteran and Cerro Gordo county pioneer, died Wednesday night , July 25, 1928 at 11 o'clock at the home of his daughter, Mrs. A. R. Schmidt, at Grafton, following an illness of several weeks, burial will take place in Plymouth, his old home, following funeral services in the Lutheran church at Grafton. The time of the funeral had not been decided Thursday.

Mr. Schilling, who for many years lived in Mason City, and who is the father of E. W. Schilling, 628 Sixth street southeast, had lived in the county since 1873. He leaves another son, H. F. Schilling, Fayette, and another daughter. Mrs. Theresa Johnson, North San Diego, California. Mrs. Schilling, his wife, died a year ago.

Mr. Schilling was born In the province of Brandenburg, Germany, July 16, 1842, and when nine years old he emigrated with his parents to the United States, settling at Janesville, Wisconsin.
In January, 1862, when 19 years old, he enlisted as a union soldier and served throughout the war with Third Wisconsin Cavalry. He fought Bushwhackers in Missouri and took part in skirmishes with Quantrel, Marmaduke and Brice.
He fought in the battles of Pea Ridge, Cane Hill. Prairie Grove, Elkhorn Tavern and served under Generals Blunt, Solomon and Siegel. He had a number of narrow escapes from death and although he never suffered injuries from the weapons of the enemy he was seriously hurt in one encounter when his horse was shot from under him. He was in the hospital at Little Rock, Arkansas, for five months, suffering from malaria fever.

He moved to Mitchell, Iowa, and then to Plymouth.
After the war he returned to Wisconsin and on October 1, 1868, he was united in marriage at Farmington, Wisconsin, to Miss Bertha Fehrmann. Mr. and Mrs. Schilling moved to Iowa and settled on a farm near Mitchell, the trip to their new home having been made in prairie schooners.

In 1875 the Schilling family moved to a farm near Plymouth, but due to the fact that he had become an invalid, he was forced to retire in 1893 and moved to the town of Plymouth. In 1901 the family moved to Mason City, where it resided until a few months ago when Mr. Schilling went to live with his daughter.

Julius Schilling was born July 16, 1842 and died July 25, 1928. He was buried in the Oakwood Cemetery Plymouth, Cerro Gordo county, Iowa.
