MASON CITY — Maurice V. Milton, 91, of Mason City, died Thursday (Jan. 6, 2005) at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave. with the Rev. Larry Day officiating. Interment will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery. Full military rites will be conducted by the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave.

Memorials may be directed to the Maurice Milton Fund.

Maurice was born on October 11, 1913, in Little Cedar, Iowa the son of Henry and Agnes (Mitchell) Milton. He grew up on a farm west of Little Cedar, where he enjoyed many fond memories with his siblings.

After graduating from Little Cedar Consolidated High School he worked for Standard Oil, before being drafted into the Army in 1941.

Upon completion of boot camp he married Teresa Brattrud in Rolla, Missouri. He served in the Army Corps of Engineers in Alaska helping to build the Alcan Highway, and in the Aleutian Islands.

After returning home from the Army he worked as an oil distributor in Jesup, Iowa, for five years before moving to Marble Rock in 1951; he then worked for Oliver Tractors in Charles City for eight years.

He then moved to the Manly area where he farmed until 1964, then moving to Mason City to work for the Globe Gazette newspaper until his retirement.

After retirement Maurice worked his summers at the I-35 Rest Area Information Center.

Maurice was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church, Moose Lodge, and the River City Squares and the Balance and Swing Square Dance Club.

Maurice is survived by his daughter, Janice and husband Dale Clapper of Clear Lake; granddaughter, Denise and husband Jeff Powers of Indian Mound, Tenn.; grandsons, David Clapper and wife Christine and Chad Clapper and wife Angela, both of Clear Lake; seven great-grandchildren; brother, Lloyd Milton of Osage; and several nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, William and Leslie Milton and sister, Laura Ethan.
