W.R. HARTWIG
LONG RESIDENT
OF COUNTY DIES

Born and Lived Here Most
of His Life on the
Home Farm

Another life-long resident of the county has passed away. William R. Hartwig died at his farm home southwest of Osage Sunday, after an illness that began last fall. He was not critically ill until a few weeks ago when his condition rapidly became worse and he died Sunday evening, March 7, 1943, at 7:45 o'clock.

William Rudolph Hartwig was born, the youngest child of a family of four sons and five daughters, to Frederick Hartwig and his wife, Margaret, nee Kneisel, on November 8, 1873, on what these many years has been the Hartwig farm, a little less than a mile east of the St. John's church southwest of Osage.

He came into the world in those days when the early settlers, as the Lutherans who had settled in East Cedar township, were visited by traveling ministers. It was by such a pastor, the Rev. Wilke, that the child born to the Hartwigs in 1873 received the sacrament of holy baptism, and was given the name of William Rudolph.

The youth grew to manhood, and on May 22, 1900, was married to Adele Muller. Three children, Vernon, Edna and Gretchen, were born to them, only to be taken by death; the first and the last after but a very brief stay in this life; and Edna in her teens. They, themselves, were visited by severe illness, so that after a little over 25 years of married life and active training Mr. Hartwig held a sale. It became necessary for him to undergo a major operation, and after partial recovery the Hartwigs made their home in Osage for two years. Returning to their country home their life was beautified by the loving care they bestowed upon each other in their impaired health. Yet another tragedy entered their lives when their home burned.

A year and a month ago the faithful wife was laid to final rest.

Mr. Hartwig dearly loved his church, diligently attended its services and was mindful of its welfare. For a goodly number of years he served as an elder, and when no longer able to serve was made an honorary deacon.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, and five sisters; his wife and three children.

Those left to mourn his passing are his brothers-in-law, George Frese of Nora Springs, Herman Muller, and Dr. A.L. Muller of charles City; his sisters-in-law, Mrs. Emma Schmidt of California, Mrs. W. Dieterichs of Osage, Mrs. Ferd Hartwig of Osage, Mrs. John Hartwig of Nora Springs; and numerous nephews and nieces, besides a host of friends and acquaintances.

His age at death was 69 years, three months and 29 days.
