The following is adapted from William May Nicol III story on FindaGrave.com -- credit to Evelyn Nelson.

WILLIAM M. NICOL, III (82 years, 7 months) (a twin) was the fourth child of William Nicol and Agnes Bronlee (Scottish immigrants). He and his twin sister, Agnes Nancy Nicol 1803-1877) were born May 22, 1803 in Gillhead, Carluke, Lanarkshire, Scotland. (His twin sister, Agnes, married William Austin. They converted to become Mormons and went to Utah).

When William was 16 his family immigrated from Scotland to America and settled in Hammond, St. Lawrence County, NY around 1820.

It is said that William first met his future bride, Margaret Pollock, when he saved her from drowning after she fell overboard into the St. Lawrence River on the ferry traveling between Canada and New York. Their eventual marriage resulted in a happy family of 12 children all of whom were born in Hammond, St. Lawrence County, NY. William married Margaret Pollack on April 29, 1825 in Hammond, St. Lawrence county, NY.

In 1861 William and Margaret and some of their children made the difficult journey across the U.S. to find farm land in N.E. Iowa. They settled in Stacyville, Mitchell county, Iowa. They lived there with the exception of eight years in which they lived in Dickinson county, Iowa.

William and Margarete had 12 children: Elizabeth Nancy (William Revillo Nichols), Agnes Bronlee (William Nichols Lynch), Margaret (3 mo.- August 12, 1830 - October, 1830) Robert Bruce Nicol (Mary Ann Kelly, Martha E. Fletcher), William Wallace Nicol (Altamand Polly Nichols), Margaret Ann (1. George Bissel Hitchcock, 2. John Kesler), John Nicol (d. January 26, 1856, in Hammond, NY, of consumption), Violet Catherine (James Brainard), James Ross Nicol, David M. Nicol (Mary Blackler), Clark Levi Nicol (Mary Ellen Anderson), Martha "Mattie" Jeanette (John Dickensen).

William joined the Methodist Episcopal church at age 62 and remained a consistent member till his death. He was for the last eight months incapacitated, but until that time he was actively and intelligently interested in all matters social and religious. He was a good citizen and valuable member of the community.

William died October 24, 1885 in Stacyville with burial in Stacyville Cemetery.
