Rites Here Monday;
A Former ResidentFuneral service was held here Monday afternoon for Mrs. Martha J. Austin, called here by her friends "Mat" Austin. Deceased was a well-known former resident. The following account of her death was printed in the Waterloo Courier.
"After a two-week illness of complications due to age, Mrs. Martha J. Austin died at 5:20 a.m. Saturday at the home of a son, Clifford R. Austin, 141 Harrison street. She was 84 years old and was the widow of Stephen L. Austin, who served as a commissary sergeant in the Civil war. He died at Osage, Iowa, thirty years ago.
"Martha J. Henderson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George W. Henderson, was born April 19, 1854, at Deposit, N.Y. When she was about seven years old her parents moved to Iowa, settling at Osage.
She was married there to Mr. Austin about 61 years ago. After her husband's death she made her home with her son.
"At Osage, Mrs. Austin was a member of the Methodist church, Women's Relief Corps and the Order of the Eastern Star.
"Surviving besides the son are a granddaughter, Mrs. Della Morse and grandchildren, Betty and Jack Morse, 533 Lime street.
"The body was removed to the Petersen Bros. funeral home.
"Funeral services will be held at the Champion funeral home in Osage, Monday at 2:00 p.m., with the Rev. H. M. Grant, pastor of the First Methodist church in Osage, officiating. Burial will be at Osage."
