CENTENNIAL, Colo. — Eleanor Janet (Fouts) Krapek, 75, formerly of Mason City, Iowa, died June 27, 2008 at Porter Hospice, Centennial, Colo., following a three-year battle with lung cancer.

A Celebration of Life service will take place Saturday Sept. 6, 2008 in Mason City, Iowa, with details to be announced later. Cremation rites have been accorded.

Memorial contributions may be sent c/o The Elly Krapek Memorial Fund, 700 North I Street, Monmouth, IL 61462. They will be distributed among her favorite charities and organizations, including Porter Hospice (Centennial, Colo.), the Block Center for Integrative Cancer Care (Evanston), the Diana Price-Fish Foundation (Denver, Colo.), and Multiple Myeloma Research.

She was born June 10, 1933 in Canton, to George M. and Thelma R. (Landis) Fouts. She was raised in Canton, graduating from Canton High School and going on to study nursing at the University of Iowa.

She married Joseph John Krapek Sept. 7, 1952 at Canton. They lived in Texas and Clear Lake, Iowa, before settling in Mason City, where they lived for more than 50 years.

She worked for 10 years as a paraprofessional at Mason City High School. Upon her daughter’s graduation from high school, Krapek was trained by her daughter to replace her as a unit secretary at North Iowa Medical Center. She stayed in this position for more than 20 years, until the time of her retirement in 2003.

She was active with the Hoover PTA, served on the board of the Mason City YWCA, and was active within the Republican Party. Among her hobbies was a love of reading, listening to good music, gardening, and travel. She enjoyed baking and spur-of-the-moment dinner parties. She loved giving out her favorite recipes, her “Jefferson Avenue” neighbors and their many years of back door and backyard get-togethers and, upon her relocation to Littleton Colo. in 2007, she was able to experience her love of nature.

She is survived by a son, Steven Krapek of San Jose, Calif. (Kelly (Urban) Krapek, Chanhassen, Minn.), daughter Kimberley Krapek of Littleton, Colo., and daughter, Kay Nolan (Dan) of Monmouth. She was the grandmother of John and Annie Mae Krapek, Chanhassen, Minn., and Andrea Nolan of Davenport, Iowa.

Also surviving are sister-in-law Mary Ann (Krapek) McDonald and husband David of Orinda, Calif., sister-in-law Shirley Krapek of Grand Canyon, Ariz. and nephew John VanVoorhis and family of Fort Meyers, Fla. She also leaves behind special friends Nancy Suty, Littleton, Colo., and Michela Del Borgo, San Jose, Calif.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe; two sons, Gary and John; her parents, one sister, Charlotte (Fouts) Cook of Roseville, sister-in-law Helen Richey of Van Nuys, Calif., mother-in-law Sophie Krapek and brother-in-law, Dr. Frank Krapek, both of Osage, Iowa.
