J.P. Miller, 1825-1894

Death of J. P. Miller

J. P. Miller, who became immortal Saturday morning, Oct. 6, 1894, after a short final illness, had been a prominent citizen of Mitchell for twenty-seven years.

He was born in Springfield, Vermont, March 8, 1825; journeyed westward to Wisconsin when twenty-one years of age, and in about one year thereafter married Martha C. Wells, of Jefferson, Wisconsin, who died in 1849. The following Spring he went to California and remained three years amid the wild scenes of the mining districts.

Returning to Wisconsin in 1853, he married Mrs. Altha W. Cole of Cooksville, and finally moved to Mitchell, Iowa. Two daughters were born in Cooksville. One died in infancy; the other married E. D. Williams, and now lives in Duluth. She was present with her mother at the bedside when her father passed away.

The deceased was a leading member of the Congregational church in this place, with which he became identified in 1877. The funeral services were observed at the residence Monday morning at ten o'clock, and the remains laid to rest in Oak Grove cemetery, Rev. E. P. Crane officiating. Thus another of our respected townsmen has dropped from among us in accordance with the great immutable law - Temperance Power.
