Bernard John May, 91, of Stacyville, Iowa, died Sunday, April 14, 2002, at Mitchell County Regional Health Center, Osage.
He was born Dec. 31, 1910, in Meyer, Iowa, to Henry J. and Anna M. (Hackenmiller) May.
On Nov. 15, 1938, he married Regina Anne Bissen in Johnsburg.
Bernard was a life long farmer in the Johnsburg area, retiring to Stacyville, Iowa in 1977. He was a member of Visitation Catholic Church in Stacyville, the Knights of Columbus and was instrumental in starting both the St. John's Council 3812 of Adams and the Marian Council 8650 of Stacyville, serving as Marian Council's First Grand Knight. He was a fourth degree member of the Knights of Columbus Jean Pierre Aluneau Assembly in Austin. He also helped with the organization and building of the Stacyville Community Nursing Home, being an original board member and its first president. In addition, he served on the Stacyville Creamery Board. In his retirement years, he made many rosaries.
Survivors include wife, Regina, Stacyville, Iowa; children, Robert (Audrey) May, Stacyville, Iowa; Rita (Daniel) McCoy, Rochester; Carol (John) Sullivan, Osage, Iowa; Ann (Tom) Wolf, Sheffield, Iowa; Gerard (Janet) May, Osage, Iowa; Edward (Teresa) May, Stacyville, Iowa; Pamela (Richard) Fox, Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Mark (Rosanne) May, Adams; Catherine (Daniel) Moellenbeck, Granger; 27 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; brothers, Fred (Dorothy) May, Rose Creek; Anthony May, Fond du Lac, Wis.; sisters, Elizabeth (Joseph) Martyniak, Taunton, Mass.; Olivia (Robert) Pitzen, Stacyville, Iowa; Evelyn (Ralph) Brumm, Osage, Iowa; sister-in-law, Irma May, Stacyville, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by his parents; son, John; brothers, Edmund, Othmar and Clement; sisters, Sister Margaret May and Dorothy May.
Visitation: 3:30 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, April 16, 2002, at the church with a 4 p.m. Rosary, a 7 p.m. Scripture Service and a 7:45 p.m. Knights of Columbus Rosary.
Service: 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, at Visitation Catholic Church in Stacyville, Iowa with Father Joseph Schneider officiating.
Interment: Visitation Catholic Cemetery, Stacyville, Iowa.
Funeral Home: Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home, Osage, Iowa.

Funeral services for Bernard John May, 91, of Stacyville were held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, April 17, 2002 at Visitation Catholic Church in Stacyville with Father Joseph Schneider officiating. Interment was in Visitation Catholic Cemetery in Stacyville.
Bernard died Sunday, April 14 at Mitchell County Regional Health Center in Osage.
Bernard John May was born Dec. 31, 1910 in Meyer, Iowa the son of Henry J. and Anna M. (Hackenmiller) May. He was united in marriage to Regina Anne Bissen on Nov. 15, 1938 at Johnsburg, Minnesota. Bernard was a life long farmer in the Johnsburg area retiring to Stacyville in 1977. He was a member of Visitation Catholic church, a member of Knights of Columbus and was instrumental in starting both the St. John's Council 3812 of Adams, Minnesota and the Marian Council 8650 of Stacyville, serving as Marian Council's first Grand Knight. Bernard was preceded in death by his parents, son John in 1974; three brothers, Edmund, Othmar and Clement; two sisters, Sister Margaret May and Dorothy May.
