Tollef Tollefson 1866-1950

St. Ansgar, Iowa — Funeral services were Wednesday for Tollef O. Tollefson who died at Mercy Hospital, Mason City, Saturday afternoon following train-car accident in St. Ansgar earlier Monday.

Born August 30, 1866, son of Ole and Guri Tollefson Skolt, at Hemseda, Norway. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith.
His family came to America in 1884 following death of father.

He had lived in St. Angar community since 1888. He lived with family on a farm near St. Ansgar for many years. He had lived in Iowa for several years prior to death and had been an active member of First Lutheran Church, serving as janitor and sexton of cemetery.

He was preceded in death by his parents, four sisters, and one brother.

He leaves a brother, John, of St. Ansgar.

Tollef Tollefson Killed in Train-Car Accident Saturday

Funeral services were held on Wednesday afternoon at the First Lutheran Church for Tollef Tollefson who died Saturday afternoon following a auto-train accident here. Burial was in the First Lutheran Cemetery. The Reverend O. A. Langehough officiated.

The accident threw Tollefson out of the right side of the car onto the pavement and he sustained a crushed chest and head injuries from the fall.

Glenn Cue, local station agent, who witnessed the mishap, summoned Dr. William Owen, who administered first aid to the injured man. Tollefson was then rushed to the Mason City Hospital in the Schroeder and Houg ambulance. He died about 40 minutes after his arrival at the hospital.

The tollefson sedan was heading west at the time of the accident and it was thrown onto the cow catcher of the local freight engine stopped near the crossing.

The conductor of the stopped train attempted to flag down the approaching car, but Tollefson apparently did not see him. The right front of the car struck the left front of the southbound freight engine doing considerable damage to the car.

Tollefson had been at a garage to get a battery charged and was on his way home when the accident occurred. He lived with his brother John in St. Ansgar. Both had been engaged in farming near St. Ansgar before their retirement some time ago.

Tollef O. Tollefson, son of Ole and Guri Tollefson Skolt, was born August 30, 1866, at Hemsedal, Norway. He was baptized September 30, 1866 at Hemsedal, by Reverend Skattebol. He came to America in the year of 1884 and since 1888 has been a faithful member of the First Lutheran congregation. He served as sexton of the cemetery and as janitor at the church for a number of years. With his family he farmed for many years and also worked as a carpenter in the community. Upon his retirement he moved to St. Ansgar where he has since made his home.

He leaves to mourn his passing a brother, John, and one niece, Mrs. John Ashiem, of Mohall, North Dakota.

He was preceded in death by his father who was buried in Norway, his mother who came to America with him, four sisters Margit, Belle, Kari, and Julia, and one brother Tollef.
