PEORIA, ILLINOIS -- Funeral services for George "Motorcycle George" Barrett, age 70, of Peoria were held Monday, Oct. 30, 2006 at Davison-Fulton Bartonville Chapel, with Rev. Keith Teabolt officiating Interment was in Lancaster Cemetery at Glasford. George passed away at his residence in Peoria, Ill., Oct. 26, 2006.
George Barrett was born to Donald V. Barrett and Calista M. (Weber) Barrett, Aug. 16, 1936 at home in Fayette County Iowa. At the age of two the family moved to Mitchell, where his father operated the Interstate Power Plant. George grew up and attended school in Mitchell and later joined the service.
After his stint in the service George was united in marriage to Darla Nordyke of Osage and later divorced. Together they had four children, Debra, David, Steven Barrett and Christie Berg. All live in the Peoria area. George later married Rose Lyon and gained two stepchildren Vickie Stambaugh and Rodney Lyon, they were also divorced. He married Beth Baker in November of 1986 who had three children, Jeremy (Erica) Elliott, Dawn, Putney and Brandy Carpenter, all together giving him a total of 18 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
George worked for Caterpillar in Peoria until due to bad health he had to take early retirement. During his tenure there he belonged to UAW Local 974 which he was very proud of and was a very active member. In April of 2006 George was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer.
George was an avid motorcyclist. He rebuilt cycles and for the last few years he fixed and rebuilt computers.
His funeral procession was led by a Harley Hearse Carriage, followed by several cyclist, friends and relatives. George rode out in style.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Thomas and John Barrett and sisters Marion Maston and Elizabeth Lerum.
His survivors include his wife Beth, stepchildren, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and two sisters Delores Barrett of Garner, Margaret Fink, Nora Springs and several nephews and nieces.
