Esther Leona Freese, age 92, of Osage, Iowa, and formerly of Dike, Iowa, died Tuesday, March 13, 2018, at Mitchell County Regional Health Center in Osage.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 17, 2018, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Osage with Rev. Cindy S. Krause officiating. Burial will be 2:00 p.m. Saturday at the Elmwood Cemetery in Dike. Visitation will be from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the church.
Esther was born July 7, 1925, in rural Grundy County the daughter of Renko, Sr. and Henrietta (Mammen) Schmidt. She attended school in Grundy County and graduated from Grundy Center High School in 1943. On November 16, 1948, she was united in marriage to Christian Edward Freese in Holland, Iowa. Esther taught in country schools when she was first married and then later worked in the Food Service Department at U.N.I. in Cedar Falls. She was a member of the Dike United Methodist Church. She enjoyed crossword puzzles, upholstering, and gardening. Esther was a gifted baker and seamstress; she made numerous themed birthday cakes and Halloween costumes for her grandchildren. She most of all loved spending time with her family.
Esther is survived by her husband of almost 70 years, Chris Freese of Osage; her children, Keith (KaVetta) Freese of Wentzville, Missouri, Ardi (Jon) Gisleson of Floyd, Sheryl (Stuart) Dusenberry of Atlantic, Joan (Mark) Gutzmer of Minneapolis, Minnesota, and Kristin (Ernie) Batson of Minneapolis, Minnesota; 12 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; brother, Carl Schmidt of Grundy Center.
She was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Marcia Gilliam; brother, Renko Schmidt, Jr.; sisters, Anna Werkman, Lucy Abels, Martha Schmidt, Irene Schmidt, Margaret Van Deest and Baby Helene.
