After operating a solo law practice for many years, he and the late Murray Kloberdanz joined forces forming Kratchmer & Kloberdanz. Vern retired in 2014 after practicing law for an impressive 52 years.

Vern was always active in community affairs. In addition to once serving as City Attorney for the town of Mitchell, he served on the Osage Board of Adjustment, Osage Industrial Development Corp., Habitat for Humanity, North Iowa Planning Council, Chamber of Commerce, and the Osage Community Schools Capital Improvements Committee. Post 7920, First United Methodist Church, and the Osage Precisionnaires Drum and Bugle Corps. He served as legal counsel and/or an officer on occasion for many of these groups.

Vern was united in marriage with Sally Johnke on June 11, 1960, in Dixon, Illinois. Vern loved spending time with his family, fishing, boating, reading, music, following his Iowa Hawkeyes athletic teams, chocolate, and sharing a good laugh with friends and family.

Vern is survived by his wife of 56 years, Sally Kratchmer of Osage; a son, John (Terri) Kratchmer of Madison, Wisconsin; daughters, Lori Kratchmer (Greg Thorp) of Minneapolis, Minnesota, and Lisa Ketterling (Mike Eggert) of Rochester, Minnesota; three grandchildren, Nicholas Kratchmer, Kali Ketterling and Kyle Kratchmer; a brother, Dean (Sharon) Kratchmer; a sister-in-law, Kerry Kratchmer; and multiple nieces and nephews.
