Lawrence Valentine Fox, age 83, of Riceville, passed away Saturday, May 6, 2017, in his beloved home, enjoying his favorite pasttime of TV watching and relaxing in his chair. He was happy to know his corn had sprouted and he'd spent the evening driving to look at all the fields.
A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, May 12, 2017, at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in New Haven with Father Mark Murphy officiating. Burial will be at St. Peter’s Catholic Cemetery in New Haven. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. Thursday at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage.
He was born April 4, 1934, on his family farm in rural New Haven, Iowa, to Henry and Eva (Dynes) Fox. Dad was referred to by his family as Orly. He joined all his five siblings on the family farm. It was his passion to farm and have cows and a few horses; he never really thought of it as a job. He attended a one room school, then St. Mary's Catholic School in New Haven, and later graduated from Osage High School. As his stories have been told many times, there were numerous shenanigans going on with all his buddies!
He enlisted in the Air Force where he traveled "saving the world." Dad then returned home to begin farming. He met his bride, Karen, through good friends and family while Mom was attending nursing school. They married shortly thereafter on February 4, 1961. Soon to come were children that Dad would have helping with the cattle and farming. Dad was a father of much caring and love for his children. He repeated many times the quotes of his grandkids, laughing as he told them. Dad loved seeing the Mississippi, going "out west," sale barns, driving around, making numerous coffee stops, and stories of the old days with his many friends. He was a man of much knowledge in farming and the cattle business that will be missed. He passed with ten plus years of sobriety.
He will forever be united with our Mom. He will be thought of daily by his kids, Douglas, David (Kristy), Jeffrey, and Jennifer; and grandchildren, Alex and Katie.
