LAS VEGAS, NEVADA — Eugene Ray Hulshizer, 79, Facility Manager and Landscaper, of Las Vegas, NV, passed away Oct. 29, 2016, at his home in Las Vegas.
Funeral services were held in Las Vegas on Friday, Nov. 11.
Local funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Nov. 18, at Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home in Northwood with Gene’s beloved son, Rev. Curtis Hulshizer officiating.
Visitation will be held one hour prior to services at the funeral home.
Burial will take place at the Sunset Rest Cemetery immediately following services.
Gene was born on June 21, 1937, in Meltonville, Deer Creek Township, Worth County, Iowa. Gene had a wonderful upbringing on the family farm near Meltonville, stories of which were shared far and wide as he loved to reminisce and possessed an excellent memory and storytelling ability.
He graduated Carpenter High School class of 1955 and embarked on a career in the United States Marine Corps. He was exceedingly proud that his son, Curtis eventually followed in his footsteps by also serving the country as an Army Chaplain. Following discharge, Gene settled in the Los Angeles area, and ultimately Las Vegas. His greatest love was his family, visiting and watching the grandkids grow and come into their own in their various locales, most recently Hawaii.
He also enjoyed returning to Iowa to visit family and friends, and attend his Carpenter High School class reunions. He took special pride in the fact that he drove the very same car to the class reunions as he did to his senior year of high school — a beautiful blue 1953 Ford Customline that remains in the family. He will be remembered for his superb woodworking skills, keen wisdom and wit, and kindness and generosity through many typed letters and “care packages” sent from Las Vegas to friends and family throughout the country.
Gene was preceded in death by his parents, Fritz and Clara Hulshizer; and his older brother, Gerald Hulshizer.
He is survived by his children, Geraldine, Cindy, and Curtis; his daughter-in-law, Elizabeth; grandchildren, Isiah, Nathan, Sarah, Nicholas, Joshua, Tyler, Zachariah, Wesley, Benjamin, Clara, and Emma Joy; his brothers, Ronald and Russel; nieces and nephews, Debbie, Trisha, Doug, Teri, Randy, Julie, Steve, Mike and Ryan.
Palm Southwest Mortuary, Las Vegas, NV, and Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home, Northwood, have assisted the family with arrangements.
