Herman Carl Schmidt was born January 31, 1861 at Brandenburg, Germany to Karl Schmidt and Ernestine Glaeser.

In 1881, he emigrated to Iowa.

Herman married Augusta Bertha Bublitz (b 1866, d 1892 St Ansgar, Mitchell, Iowa).

The couple had 2 children:
Emma Hulda Louise (b August 1, 1885 Iowa, d August 8, 1828 St Ansgar, Mitchell, Iowa) and

Albert Ferdinand Ernst (b September 24, 1887 Hancock, Iowa, d June 22, 1949 Iowa).

After Augusta's death, Herman married a second time to Emile (Amelia) Wilhelmina Louise Bartz (b May 7, 1870, d February 1, 1911).

They had 3 daughters:
Ella Selma (b August 31, 1893, d April 25, 1962 St Ansgar, Mitchell, Iowa);

Meta Laura Mina (b December 19, 1897, d March 31, 1969 Iowa) and

Elfrieda Mina Clara (b November 6, 1900, d March 22, 2004 Orange City, Volusia, Florida).

Found in the 1895 - 1910 censuses living at St Ansgar, Mitchell, Iowa:
1895: Herman Schmidt age 34.

1900: Herman Schmidt 39; Amelia Schmidt 30; Ella S Schmidt 6; Meta Schmidt 2; Emma L Schmidt 14; Albert F Schmidt 12.

1910: Herman Schneidt 49, Emile Schmidt 39, Emma Schmidt 24, Albert Schmidt 22, Ella Schmidt 16, Matie Schmidt 12, Elfredia Schmidt 9.

Two years after Emilie's death, Herman married a third time to a widow, Dorothea Barenz (b July 14, 1879 Germany, d December 9, 1984 St Ansgar, Mitchell, Iowa) on October 22, 1913 at Mitchell Co, Iowa. The couple had no children. (Dorothea did have 2 daughters from her first marriage to Charles Winer.)

Found in the 1915 - 1940 censuses at St Ansgar, Mitchell, Iowa:
1915: Herman age 53.

1920: Herman Schmidt 58, Dorothy Schmidt 40, Lillian Winer 20, Thelma Winer 16, Alfreda Schmidt 19.

1925: Herman Schmidt 64, Mrs Dora Schmidt 45, Thelma Werner 21.

1930: Herman Schmidt 69, Dora Schmidt 51.

1940: Herman Schmidt 79, Dara Schmidt 60.

Herman Schmidt died on December 11, 1947 at St Ansgar, Mitchell, Iowa. He is buried at the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery, St Ansgar, Mitchell, Iowa. There is a memorial for him at FindAGrave #50912573.
