Nels Engebret Qvisle Nelson was born July 3, 1826 at Kvisle, Sigdal, Buskerud, Norway to Ingebret Nelson and Ingeborg Nielsdatter, the oldest of their four children. Nels had three younger sisters.
He came to America in 1853 with his parents, sailing on the ship "Sjofna" and landing at Quebec, Canada. The family traveled on to Wisconsin and settled at Dodgeville, Iowa County, Wisconsin. In 1859, they moved west to Iowa with a group of other Norwegian emigrants.
Nels married Berthe Maria Hansdatter in 1861 at Cedar, Mitchell, Iowa.
The couple had 2 sons:
Edvard Nels Bakken Nelson (b January 15, 1863 Cedar, Mitchell, Iowa, d January 25, 1945 Mason City, Cerro Gordo, Iowa) andHans Christian Nelson (b January 2, 1865 Cedar, Mitchell, Iowa, d May 22, 1925 Clear Lake, Cerro Gordo, Iowa.

Nels E Nelson died October 15, 1921 at Cedar, Mitchell, Iowa and is buried at the Rock Creek Lutheran Cemetery, Meroa, Cedar, Mitchell, Iowa.

Nels E. Nelson came to Iowa with his parents in 1859. He was born in Sigdal (Sigval), Norway, on July 3, 1826. He emigrated to Wisconsin in 1853. He was united in matrimony to Bertha Hanson, also a native of Hadeland, Norway, just before the opening of our Civil War, and settled on Section 16-97-17 of Cedar Township, Mitchell County, Iowa. Mother died November 5, 1908; father and two sons survive, as far as known in 1911. Father , with his four score years and five, is the oldest man in the township. The sons, Edward N., resides at home, and Hans C., at Clear Lake, Iowa.From the 1873 Rock Creek Lutheran Church Membership list:
Niels E. Nielsen Quivsle, age 47. Immigrated from Sigval, Norway in 1853 to Wisconsin. Moved to Mitchell County, IA in 1859. Wife: Bertha, age 44; Children: Edvard, age 10 and Hans Christian, age 8. Cemetery lot #70.
