Gurina (Julia) Johannesdatter Maakestad was born December 1860 at Cedar, Mitchell, Iowa to Johannes Moa Pedersen Maakestad and Chatrina Helvig Halvorsdatter Vambheim, the second of their four children. She also had step-siblings.

Gurina was baptized on April 26, 1861 at the First Lutheran Church at St Ansgar, Mitchell, Iowa.

Found in the 1870, 1880 censuses at Cedar, Mitchell, Iowa:
1870: John 53, Kate 40, Peter 14, Julia 10, Lydia 2; Anna Peterson age 20; says she is a hired girl, William Oleson age 25.

1880: Chatarina Peterson 53, Julia Peterson 19, Jane Peterson 12, Martin Peterson 8.

Julia married Lars (Lawrence, Larentz) Andreas Sorose on March 20, 1885 at Rock Creek Lutheran Church, Meroa, Cedar, Mitchell, Iowa. They had a son Carl (b 1887 who later used the surname Jessen)

Found in the 1900 - 1910 censuses at Vernon, Dodge, Minnesota:
1900: Lawrence *Oroos 41, Gurine *Oroos 39, Carl A J *Oroos 13.

1910: Lawrence Sosvos 51, Gurine Sosvos 49, Carl A Sosvos 23, Cathrine Maakestad 83, George Skogen 15,

Found in the 1920, 1930 censuses at Osage, Mitchell, Iowa:
1920: Lawrence Soroos 62, Gurine Soroos 59, Carl Jessen 32.

1930: Lawrence A Saroos 71, Gurine Saroos 69.

Julia died 1948 at Osage, Mitchell, Iowa and is buried at the Rock Creek Lutheran Church Cemetery, Meroa, Cedar, Mitchell, Iowa.
