A memorial service for Margaret Ann "Peg" (Kelly) Gieser, 81, will be held on Thursday at 2 p.m. at the Silverwood Good Samaritan Living Center in Silverton, Idaho. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home - South is in charge of the arrangements.
Mrs. Gieser, who was born in Osage, Iowa, died Thursday. A resident of Silver Valley for more than 50 years, she spent the past eight months in Spokane.
She graduated from high school in 1938 at the age of 16 and received her teaching certificate from Mount Mercy College in 1940. She received a degree in special education from the University of Idaho in 1973.
Mrs. Gieser taught school in Orchard and Littleport, Iowa, Alberton, Montana, and in 1947 moved to Wallace, where she taught until becoming a homemaker in 1949.
She resumed teaching in 1959 at Osburn Elementary and remained there until 1962, when she began her career at SCARC's Opportunity School She taught there until it closed in 1984.
She was a member of St. Alphonsus Catholic Church, where she played the organ from 1947 until 1997. She also played for the Congregational and Episcopal churches in Wallace in the late 1940s and early 1950s, as well as at the Bethany Lutheran Church in Osburn for many years, playing for their vacation Bible School and worship services. During the two years she resided at the Silverwood Good Samaritan Living Center, she played for both the weekly Mass and the daily devotional services.
She developed the Special Olympics program in Shoshone County. During her years with the program she took Special Olympians to international meets in Chicago, Los Angeles, mount Pleasant, Mich., and Lake Placid, N. Y.
Survivors include three daughters, Margaret Nichols of Spokane, and Marthanne Worley and Shauna Geigle; two sons, George Gieser III and Bryan Gieser; and a brother, Bernard Kelly.
