NATIVE OF GERMANY; COMES TO ST. ANSGAR IN YEAR 1885
Funeral services were conducted from Immanuel's Lutheran church for Johanna Augusta Mathilda Wilke, age 77, with the Rev. Paul Barmmer in charge of obsequies. Death came Thursday evening at her home in St. Ansgar.
Johanna Augusta Mathilda Wilke, nee Stangohr, was born May 17, 1861, at Tangen, Province of Pomerania, Germany. Here she was also baptized. At the age of eleven years she came to this country with her parents, the family making their home in Chicago, Ill. She was confirmed in the Lutheran faith, March 29, 1874, by the Rev. T.J. Grosse of St. John's Lutheran church of Chicago, and since that time was a faithful member of that church. She took an active part in the church work as long as she was physically able. She was a charter member of the Ladies Aid Society.
On June 1, 1885, she was married to Ferdinand Wilke and with him she left Chicago and came to live on a farm near Carpenter. This was their home until 1901, when they moved to their farm in Newburg township. In 1911 they retired from active farming and came to live in St. Ansgar, where the deceased has since made her home. Her husband preceded her in death in 1922.
About seven years ago, Mrs. Wilke was struck down by an auto and received severe shock, soon after which she became afflicted with shaking paralysis and at time suffered severe pain. The past four years she has been completely helpless.
Last week Tuesday evening she lost consciousness in which condition she remained until last Thursday evening when she passed away. She would have reaced her 78th birthday on May 17 had she lived.
She is survived by two sons, Julius, Los Angeles, and Otto of St. Ansgar and two daughters, Theresa, Mrs. Edwin Tittle, Harrisburg, Pa., and Magdelene, Mrs. Percy Winters, of St. Ansgar. Also surviving are four grandchildren, one brother, F.A. Stangohr, of Princeton, Minn., and one sister, Mrs. John Von Bergen, St. Ansgar.
