Fern (Streich) Barenz

OSAGE, IOWA - Fern (Streich) Barenz, 89, of Osage, passed on Wednesday, January 9, 2013, at Mitchell County Regional Health Care Center in Osage.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, January 19, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Osage with Rev. Bryan Lagerstam and Rev. Roy Ott officiating. Inurnment will be at the Osage Cemetery. There will be a time for lunch and fellowship following the memorial service at the church.

Fern was born July 27, 1923, in Grafton, the daughter of Albert and Edna (Rosenberg) Streich. The family moved to St. Ansgar when Fern was five years old and to Osage when she was in tenth grade. Fern started teaching in Cedar Township in 1942. After teaching there for four years, the school closed. She then taught in Rock Township for two years, and in later years did substitute teaching.

In October of 1943, she married Clinton Barenz. Four children were born to this union, Dennis, Thomas, Jan and James. Fern and Clinton had a food stand at the Mitchell County Fair for 30 years.

They also had the Star Light Roller Rink for 14 years, and ran the popcorn stand on a corner of Main Street for many years. Fern had been a resident at the Faith Lutheran Home for the past several years. Fern and Clinton enjoyed the trips that they took to Japan and Europe. She also enjoyed her involvement with various card clubs.

Fern is survived by her children, James Barenz (Michiyo) of Osage, and Jan Barenz (Patty Morris) of North Las Vegas, Nevada; three grandchildren, Jennifer, Nicole and Brenton Barenz; and one great-granddaughter, Alana.

She was preceded in death by her father, Albert Streich; her mother, Edna (Rosenberg) Streich Runge; her husband, Clinton in 1994; her sons, Dennis in 2012, and Thomas in 1992; and a sister, Rose Thorson.
