Millionaire Philanthropist
and Journalist Passes
Away in Washington.Washington, April 23. — Stilson Hutchins, millionaire philanthropist and retired journalist, died at his home here after a lingering illness with paralysis, he was born in Whitefield, New Hampshire, in 1838.
Mr. Hutchins began life as a reporter in Boston and later went to Iowa, where He had charge of papers in Des Moines and Dubuque.
Soon after the civil war he established the, St. Louis Times, which he sold for what was regarded as a record price. In the early 1870's he went to Washington, and with Frank Hatton, once owner of the Burlington Hawkeye and later postmaster general, he established the Washington Post.
Since Mr. Hutchins was forced by illness to relinquish control of his business affairs some months ago, a contest over the estate between his wife, Mrs. Rose Keeling Hutchins, and his two sons by a former marriage Walter Stilson and Lee Hutchins, has attracted much attention.

#2: BIOStilson Hutchins, journalist, was born at Whitefield, New Hampshire, in November 1838, and was educated in the Boston High schools and graduated from Harvard University.
In November 1854, he came to Iowa, first locating at Osage, in Mitchell County, where he established the North Iowan, which he published until about the year 1860 when he removed to Des Moines and purchased the State Journal. Under the energetic management of Mr. Hutchins the Journal became one of the leading Democrat papers of the State and its proprietor acquired wide influence in his party.
After a few years Mr. Hutchins disposed of the Journal, removing to Dubuque where he was the editor and proprietor of the Daily Herald. In 1866 Mr. Hutchins removed to St. Louis and established the Daily Times which he published until 1877. During this time he was a member of the Missouri Legislature.
Returning to New Hampshire he served a term in the Legislature in 1880. Soon after he went to Washington, D.C., and established the Washington Post which became the leading daily paper in the Nation's Capital. For many years he has been engaged in large business enterprises in that city.
He had founded the Washington Post in order to advance Democratic Party views. It was first published on December 6, 1877, and within a year the circulation topped 6,000 copies per day. In 1880, Joseph Pulitzer joined the staff.
But, by 1888 Hutchins cut his allegiance to the Democrats, and bought out the paper's only competitor, the Republican National. He sold the Post in 1889.
