Rudd, Iowa - Donald Lee Rogers, 78, of Rudd died Thursday, November 22, 2012, at his home in Rudd.
A funeral service Don will be held 11 a.m., Monday, November 26, 2012, at the Rudd United Methodist Church, 611 Sixth St., Rudd with the Reverend Wendy Johannesen officiating. Burial will follow in the Evergreen Cemetery in Rudd where full military honors will be conducted by the Nora Springs American Legion. H.D.S. Post 449.
A visitation will be held from 1 to 3 p.m., today Sunday, Nov. 25, 2012, at Sheckler Colonial Chapel, 114 North Hawkeye, Nora Springs. Should friends desire, memorial contributions may be made to the Don Rogers Memorial Fund in care of his family.
Donald Lee Rogers, son of Glenn and Glay McDowell Rogers was born March 10, 1934, in Riceville. Don and his family moved outside of Rudd where he attended the Rudd schools before he started driving truck when he was 16 years old. He drove for a couple of years before enlisting in the United States Navy in 1952 and received an honorable discharge in March of 1955. Following his honorable discharge, he continued driving truck accumulating over 2.5 million miles without an accident, up until 2005.
Don loved to drive truck and took care of his vehicles, especially polishing his chrome and tinkering with his lights. He would always stay busy, finding something to do. He also loved his John Deere tractors.
He was a member of the Rudd United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his children, Chris (Jim) Doege, Rudd, Dale (Cathy) Rogers, Mason City, Bill (Kathy) Rogers, Mason City and Glenn Rogers, Burt; stepchildren, Pam Walker (Steve) Kapping, New Haven, Iowa, Janice (Jim) Wilmoth, Palestine, Texas, Don (Corinne) Walker, Nora Springs, and Tom Walker, Rockford along with several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Betty; and his brother, Wayne Rogers.
