RICEVILLE, IOWA - Marlys D. Gronwoldt, 84, of Riceville, died Wednesday, November 21, 2012, at the Riceville Family Care and Therapy Center.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Nov. 26, 2012, at St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Riceville, with the Rev. Michael Parris and the Rev. Dan Christensen officiating. Burial will be 2 p.m. Monday at Sunnyside Cemetery in Charles City.

Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday, at Lindstrom Funeral Home, Riceville, and one hour prior to services at the church on Monday.

Obituary:
Marlys Darlene Gronwoldt was born on October 29, 1928, the daughter of Leona (Merrill) and Martin Souhrada in Saratoga Township of Howard County Iowa. Marlys attended rural school for elementary education and then graduated from Riceville Community High School in May 1947. She was baptized on February 15, 1948 at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, Riceville, Iowa. She was also confirmed at St. Peter’s. On March 30, 1948 she married Marvin William Gronwoldt at St. Peter’s of Riceville. They were the parents of eleven children.

Marlys showed her strong faith by helping others. She provided care for her father-in-law for many years. She was active on the farm and enjoyed doing volunteer work. Some of the groups she was active in throughout her lifetime include St. Peter’s Ladies Circle, Immanuel Lutheran Ladies Aide, Sunday school teacher at Immanuel Lutheran and Riceville Rest Home Ladies Auxiliary. She was affectionately known as “The Ripper” for St. Peter’s quilting group. She provided rides for members of the community when she was able. She enjoyed watching and taking in children of friends when the need arose.

She enjoyed making food for local bake sales. Marlys also enjoyed gardening – especially her flowers. She liked to travel and going out to eat. She enjoyed attending school and church events for her children and grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was also Riceville’s Mother of the Year in 1966. She was also an employee of Riceville Rest Home in the laundry and housekeeping department.

Marlys passed away at the Riceville Family Care Center on November 21, 2012, lovingly surrounded by her children. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Marvin on May 26, 1999; her brothers Darrell and Russell; sister Marlene (Souhrada) Gronwoldt; daughter Linda Hemann; son Lynsey; and grandsons Chad Gronwoldt and Allen Hemann.

Survivors include her children: Darlene (Harold) Seidel of Riceville, Marvin Jr of Riceville, Loren “Putts” (Bonnie) of Riceville, Cheryl (Paul) Kunze of Colby, Wisconsin, Leon of Mason City, Russell “Whitey” of Riceville, Charlene Atkins of Marshfield, Wisconsin, Kenneth (Nicole) of Lime Springs and Danny (Sandra) of Riceville; a son-in-law David (Meryl) Hemann of Janesville, Wisconsin; 17 grandchildren; one step granddaughter; 10 great grandchildren; sisters-in-law: Marketta Souhrada of Riceville, Betty Gronwoldt of Riceville and Edna Sir of Elma.

3:00 pm to 7:00 pm on Sunday, November 25, 2012 Lindstrom Funeral Home, Riceville

Monday, November 26, 2012 St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Riceville
