HERBERT A. AYER, 61, DIES AT HOME

Herbert Alton Ayer, 61, retired employee of the National Tea Food Store, died Tuesday morning at his home, 127 2nd S. W., after a short illness. He had lived in Mason City 14 years.

Mr. Ayer was born December 17, 1895, at Preston, Minnesota, the son of Alfred and Carolina (Yaste) Ayer. He attended school at Preston and later moved to Halbite, Canada, where he joined the Canadian Army.

In Canadian Army – Following his discharge from the Canadian Army, he moved to Sandstone, Minnesota, and then to Lime Springs, Iowa. He was married to Geneva Annonson on March 28, 1923 at Lime Springs. They made their home there until moving to Mason City in 1943, and have lived here since that time.

For many years Mr. Ayer was in the trucking business. He was later employed by the National Tea Food Store. He retired in August 1956 because of ill health. Mr. Ayer was a member of the Free Methodist Church, Mason City.

Surviving are his wife; three daughters; Mrs. Eugene (Twyla) Eldridge, Mason City; Mrs. James (Laveen) Brown, Armstrong; and Mrs. Roger (Gloria) Baker, Grand Valley, Colorado; and Donald Ayer, with the U.S. Air Force in Japan and nine grandchildren.

Two sisters; Susy Frankson, Moose Lake, Minnesota, and Mrs. Walter (Verna) Peters, Newton, Kansas, and a brother, Sam Ayer, Maricopa, California, also survive.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and three sisters.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete, pending arrival of relatives. The McAuley-Scanlan Funeral Home is in charge.

HERBERT A. AYER SERVICE HELD IN FUNERAL CHAPEL

Funeral services for Herbert Alton Ayer, 61, retired employee of the National Tea Food Store who died Tuesday, were held Friday afternoon at the McAuley-Scanlan Chapel. The Rev. Kenneth Goodberry, pastor of the Free Methodist Church, officiated.

Mrs. Leo Warner was soloist, Miss Mildred Farrington, organist. Pallbearers were Reeve Eldridge, Clear Lake; Ezra Cerney, Plymouth; Russell Schwartz, Louis and Oscar Heinold and Alba Robinson Mason City.
Burial was in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Note**one of their sons isn’t mentioned in the obit but he is in the 1930 and 1940 Census records with them.

Alton A. Ayer who was born March 1, 1924 in Minnesota and he died November 12, 1991. He is buried in Holy Cross Lutheran Cemetery, in Emma, Lafayette Co., Missouri.

In the 1940 Census, they are living in Riceville, Jenkins Township, Mitchell County, Iowa
