Jemima (Cook) Winsor – June 28, 1813 – April 5, 1898
Jemima Cook was born June 28, 1813 at Mears Ashby, Northamptonshire, England, the daughter of William and Sarah Cook. She married Henry Winsor, the son of Libbeau and Sarah (Neal) Winsor.
Jemina was a stern woman. She was the motivating force behind the move to America. You wouldn’t exactly say that she was the domineering kind but she had definite ideas of right and wrong and there was no in between.
Even if it had not been her idea to move to this country, she still would have felt it her duty to endure any hardships necessary in order to remain with her husband. She expected others to have the same high principles she possessed and if they did not live up to them she didn’t keep her opinions to herself but spoke right up.
Her daughter-in-law, Edith (Banks) Winsor, related that a day or two after the birth of Edith and Samuel’s first born twins, Jemima paid a visit. She expressed disapproval at finding Edith in bed and stated that she, herself, arose on the same day she had given birth to her own children and carried on household duties as usual.
Jemima believed that children should be well-trained, that they should be seen and not heard, yet she had love in her heart for them.
At least twice in her lifetime she took into her home motherless or orphaned grandchildren and helped to raise them.
Her great-grandchild, Etta Robbins Paulson, recalls the love and hospitality with which her family was received when they went to visit Jemima Winsor. There were always candy and doughnuts for the children. Etta remembers her great-grandmother as a tall, heavy person.
They were members of the Methodist Church.
Through her encouragement, Jemima’s niece, Sarah Ann Easton, came from England and made her home in Iowa. Sarah Ann (Easton) Marriott, in turn, brought several of her nieces and nephews, the children of Sarah’s half-sister, Mary Catherine (Cook) Harris.
Jemima died April 5, 1898 and was buried in the Riverside Cemetery, Riceville, Mitchell County, Iowa.
