Maurice Paul Roche, 91, of Emmetsburg, died Monday, July 11, 2005, at Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars.

Maurice Paul Roche, son of John W. and Adele (Zilk) Roche, was born on March 7, 1914, in Riceville. He was educated in Riceville. He attended the University of Iowa and graduated from the Drake University College of Pharmacy.

On June 6, 1942, Paul was united in marriage to Gladys Cecilia Clancy in Charles City. He served in the United States Army during World War II as a first lieutenant in charge of pharmacy services at Camp Mackall, N.C.

After his military service, the couple made their home in Emmetsburg.

Paul owned and operated Roche's Drug Store in Emmetsburg for many years, and was honored with the 50-year Achievement Award from the Governor of Iowa for Pharmacy.

He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church at Emmetsburg, Palo Alto County Planning and Zoning Committee, American Legion and Isaac Walton League.

An avid sportsman, Paul enjoyed hunting and fishing, and he worked on numerous environmental projects including the Five Island Lake restoration and dredging project. He was a conservationist before it was popular. Paul loved Emmetsburg and her lake, and he always worked to support the town. Most of all, he loved his grandchildren and was proud of all their accomplishments.

Left to cherish his memory are his sons, John (Connie) of Winona, Minn., and James (Shiela) of Le Mars; grandchildren, Joe of Wauwatosa, Wis., Jim of St. Paul, Minn., Sarah of Sioux Falls, S.D. and Katie of Cedar Falls.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Pauline Porstman; and his beloved wife, Gladys, who died Feb. 28, 2003.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 2 p.m. today (Thursday) at Holy Family Catholic Church in Emmetsburg with the Rev. Clem Currans officiating. The Joyce Funeral Home in Emmetsburg is in charge of arrangements.
