Funeral services for Vernon Smesrud were held on Saturday, December 1, 1984 at First Lutheran Church in St. Ansgar. Rev. T. Hughes officiated, with burial in the First Lutheran Cemetery, St. Ansgar. He died on Wednesday, November 28, at the St. Ansgar Good Samaritan Center.
Vernon Leroy Smesrud was born on June 6, 1907 in Joice, Iowa, the son of Herman and Thea Amundson Smesrud. He was baptized there on July 7, 1907. His parents moved to St. Ansgar where Vernon was confirmed in 1922. He was educated in the St. Ansgar school system, graduating in 1926. After graduating from high school he attended Gates Business College in Waterloo.
He was united in marriage to Alice Fossey at Osage. He was employed as a United States government poultry inspector for many years and in that capacity he traveled extensively in Iowa. Later the couple moved to Arkansas where he continued to work until his retirement in 1972. In 1977, the family returned to St. Ansgar; his wife died in 1981.
Vernon was remarried to Margaret McPherrin on June 26, 1982. After living in California for two years, he returned to St. Ansgar. His failing health required him to spend his last months at the St. Ansgar Good Samaritan Center.
Survivors include his sister, Mrs. Marie Nyman of Key Largo, Florida; his sisters-in-law, Mrs. Edith Griffith of Harrisburg, Penn., and Mrs. Shirley Fossey of St. Ansgar; also his mother-in-law, Mrs. Esther Fossey of St. Ansgar; wife, Margaret of California and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Alice Fossey Smesrud and one sister, Mrs. Thelma Tesch.
