Funeral services were held for Melvin Sponheim, 89, on July 3, 1984, at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Osage. Pastor J. Nesheim officiated at the service, with burial in the Osage City Cemetery. He died on Saturday, June 30, 1984, at Mitchell County Memorial Hospital in Osage. Champion Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Melvin Sponheim was born June 14, 1895 in Rock Township, the son of Henry and Mary Skutle Sponheim. He was baptized on July 7, 1895 by Pastor Johan Olsen and confirmed on August 21, 1910 by Pastor Martin Waldeland, at the First Lutheran Church in St. Ansgar.
He was united in marriage to Alma Evenson of OSage on November 21, 1917. They celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary in 1983. They farmed south of St. Ansgar in Rock Township until 1950 when they moved to Osage. He maintained a life-long interest in farming.
He is survived by his wife, Alma; one daughter, Agnes (Mrs. Vernon Gordon) of Northwood; by one son, Harlan Sponheim of rural Osage; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and by one brother, Selmer Sponheim of St. Ansgar.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers who died in childhood.
