The news of the sudden death of Mrs. J.H. Johnson this morning came as a shock to Osagers. Mrs. Johnson had been in poor health for sometime, but was not at present thought to be more so than usual, but she died suddenly after arising this morning at 7 o'clock.
Olive Mary Kinney was born at Mt. Vernon, Ohio, September 6, 1842, and died at Osage, Iowa, January 30, 1924, at the age of 81 years.
When she was nine yeawrs old she moved with her parents to a farm near Angola, Indiana. She attended public school, a normal school and spent one year at Hillsdale, Michigan college. She began teaching at the age of 15, and continued in this work for ten years. She had unusual ability in this work, and during the earliest history of the county, conducted a night school for immigrants, teaching English, United States history, and arithmetic, and many good citizens received valuable assistance from her generous and capable training. That was after her marriage to J.H. Johnson, whom she met in 1867 on a visit to Iowa relatives, at the home of her "uncle Arad" Hitchcock. She returned to Osage in 1869 and they were married.
To this union four children were born: Karl J. and Cora H., of Osage; Mary Hudson, Beach, N.D.; and Katie, who died in infancy.
Mr. Johnson, undoubtedly one of the most influential citizens in the hisotry of the county, preceded her in death on June 26, 1919. He was one of the organizers of the Farmers National Bank, of which he became president. In which capacity he acted until 1914. Because of her own ability and her husband's prominence, Mrs. Johnson had an active part in all civic and humanitarian interests of the community, and equal suffrage has had her earnest support, as did the W.C.T.U. She was a member of the Shakespeare Club. She was active in church interests, and taught a Sunday school class in the Methodist church for years.
A good wife and mother, persistent student, spelndid citizen, kind friend and neighbor--this summarizes her character as Osage people will remember her.
Funeral services will be held at her home Friday afternoon and Rev. Walker will conduct the service. Interment will be made in the family lot in the Osage Cemetery, beside her husband.
