OBITUARY

Jacob Haight was born in Rensselaerville, Albany county, N.Y., January 29, 1818 and died at Osage, Ia., December 9, 1901; thus being nearly 84 years of age. He was married to Elizabeth Barrett, in 1839. Seven children were born of this union, five of which are now living. His first wife having died in 1858. Mr Haight was married again to Margaret Smith in 1859, two children, Orn and Horace were born to them.

Early in the 60's Mr. Haight came west and in 1867 settled in Iowa, where he has ever since resided, never revisiting his early home. "Iowa," said he "is good enough for me."

His second wife died in 1881 and in 1884 he married Sarah Catherine Rich. One child, Mary was born to them, and his other children having long been in homes of their own, she was his special comfort and pride and upon her now in her fifteenth year, is the loss of a father
most keenly felt.

Mr. Haight was not at the time of his death a member of any church, though for some time he belonged to the Free Methodist church of this city. He loved his quiet, secluded riverside home and for some years has left it but little.

His sickness was brief, though from the first he believed it would prove fatal. A severe chill, followed by a complication of other troubles, was more than his feeble constitution could withstand and in less than a week, death had come. Thus, one by one, the old settlers are passing away, and another honored and respected by all has passed to the Great Beyond. The funeral services were conducted from the home by Rev. E.R. Martin, December 12.
