Funeral of Mrs. Herbert
And Her Two Children at Belvidere,
Illinois
The funeral of Mrs. Phil Herbert and two children, who were killed in the terrible cyclone at Osage, Iowa, Friday night last took place yesterday afternoon from the First Baptist church, and was one of the saddest and most solemnly impressive ever witnessed in Belvidere. Following are brief obituaries of the mother, son and baby daughter.
Addie W. Wright was born in Flora township, Boone county, November 4, 1866. On her 20th birthday she was married to Philip S. Herbert, in Belvidere. Soon after her marriage she removed with her husband to Kansas, remaining there until about two years ago, when she returned to Belvidere in August, 1893, and with her family she moved to Iowa, near Osage. In the terrible cyclone of last Friday night she was carried about forty rods from her home. When she was found she was dead. She was a member of the First Baptist church of this city, having united during the pastorate of the Rev. H. W. Reed. Mrs. Herbert was a woman loved and esteemed highly by those who knew her, and earnestly trusted in her Savior.
Harry Reed Herbert was born in Wamego, Kansas, September 19, 1887. At the time of his death, which occured last Friday night, he was seven years old. He was a bright, beautiful boy.
Ruth Emma Herbert was born May 11, 1894, at Osage, Iowa and with her mother and brother lost her life on the same dreadful night.
The bodies were brought to Belvidere Sunday morning. The funeral was in the First Baptist church in the afternoon at 3 o'clock, the pastor Rev. R. S. Walker, officiating. It as a service never to be forgotten. The auditorium was crowded to the doors and scores were unable to enter.
Rev. Mr. Walker's text was found in Matt. 7-24-28. Christ's presenting the picture of a tremendous storm to test men. There are two classes of men: The foolish, who build their lives on this world's promises, shall end in destruction. The wise, who build on Jesus Christ shall be safe.
Our sister built on Christ. When this storm of last Friday came she was ready. If she had not been what the result? Are you ready?
