JOHNSON, Sam 1851-1908

JOHNSON, RASMUSSEN, SMALLEY

The death of Sam Johnson which was briefly mentioned in last week's Enterprise was a very sad one, coming as it did without warning. For nearly a year he had been suffering from the effect of rupture caused by falling from a wagon while hauling grain, and while he did not suffer greatly he thought it best to Have an operation and have the injury repaired. The operation was successsfully performed a week ago Saturday. He rallied from the effect and was getting along nicely, when without warning on Tuesday evening, after having eaten his supper apparently feeling in first class condition, a blood-vessel broke in his lungs and he died in a very short time.

Sam Johnson was born January 30, 1851, at Graulev, Denmark. There he grew to manhood and in 1880 he was united in marriage to Laura Rasmussen, who with six children are left to mourn the loss of a kind and affectionate father and husband.

In 1888 they emigrated to America coming directly to St. Ansgar. They lived for a time northeast of St. Ansgar, then east of town, later near Stacyville, and for the last five years on the Thurston farm southeast of town, where the family now reside. The children are Mary, wife of Chester Smalley, who resides six miles south of New Haven, Sophie, Albert, Rasmus, Jennie and Henry, the youngest being 11 years of age. He also has two brothers and a sister in Denmark. The funeral was held last Thursday. As Rev. Waldeland could not get here in time, Rev. Galbreth of the Methodist church officiated at the home and Rev. Waldeland arrived from Adams in time to conduct the services at the U.N.L. church. His remains were laid to rest in the St. Ansgar cemetery. The sincere sympathy of the entire community go out to the bereaved wife and children.

Card of Thanks

We wish to express our sincere thanks to the many kind friends for their aid and sympathy in this hour of our greatest sorrow, in the loss of our beloved husband and father.
