Emma (Gustafson) Gunderson 1871-1956

The dream of her own home finally came true when a little cottage, glistening white in its new coat of paint, looked through its many windows across the Mississippi river toward the Wisconsin hills announcing its completion and inviting the owner to come and make herself at home.

There was a good supply of wood in the closed porch at the rear, smoke poured from a small brick chimney and indoors, rugs, chairs, bedroom furniture and kitchen range were all in place.

Mr. and Mrs. Axel Gunderson had lived in the Lamoille area for many years until his death in 1945.

For a time she made her home with a daughter Julia Hultman in Osage, Iowa. After her daughter's death she bought a home in Brownsville to be near her son, Leon. Then when highway 26 was surveyed it was found that several houses were in the path of the new right-of-way.

Of course hers was the one of these and she was obliged to give up her home and live with her sn and family.
Last summer she came back to this area to be with another son, Victor, near Pickwick. She still dreamed of having her own little home where her former friends could drop in for a visit.

Finally ground was purchased in the village of Lamoille, just off the highway, and a small cottage was begun. Then without warning illness came to Mrs. Gunderson and for several weeks she was unable to see what progress was being made on her house.

As she regained her strength, visits were made and just before Thanksgiving the cottage was pronounced complete.

Her household possessions were brought in and put in the proper place but actual possession had to be postponed because a suitable companion had not been found. Mow Mrs. Edith Fitch comes in once each day to help her with the affairs of the household.

Her friends now see smoke again billowing from the little red chimney and they know that for a time at least, until she can find a full time housekeeper, Mrs. Gunderson is enjoying her return home.
