Gilbert Oscar Hanson was born at St. Ansgar, Iowa, February 1, 1881. He was baptized and confirmed by Rev. Olsen. He attended St. Ansgar Seminary for several years graduating in 1898. He taught school for one year near Enderlin, N.D. After his return he accepted a position at James A. Smith, a head office. He retained his position for four years until his health began to fail and then took an eastern historical trip for recuperation. Last winter he suffered an attack of Gripp from which he never fully recovered, this attack being followed by an attack of inflammatory rheumatism and a stroke of paralysis. All that loving hearts could suggest or kind hands could do was done for him. He lingered three weeks after the stroke, passing away Sunday night, August 30, 1908 at 6 o'clock at the age of 27 years, and 7 months. His aged parents, three brothers and one sister, survive him and keenly mourn the loss of a beloved son and brother.
The funeral was conducted by Rev. Waldeland at the N.L. church and the remains laid to rest in the N.L. cemetery on Wednesday afternoon September 2nd.
Gilbert was in the bloom of manhood, a kind and upright man and will be greatly missed by his many friends. The esteem in which he was held was shown by the many floral greetings and the large number that came to pay their last respects and to take a last look at the face they had loved to see when full of life and animation.
