Mrs. Ellen Dahley was born Elia Ragnhilda Ingebretsdatter Knutson on the Knutson farm near Mitchell, Iowa, on December 9, 1854. She was the only daughter of Ingebret and Kari Knutson and one of the first immigrant children born in Mitchell County. She grew to womanhood in the parental farm and received her secular education in the rural schools of her community and her Christian education in the Lutheran church. She was baptized and confirmed by the pioneer pastor, the Rev. C.L. Clausen, of St. Ansgar, Iowa.

On May 18, 1871 she entered into matrimony with John (Hans F.) Schoger of this community. Immediately after their marriage they located on their farm in Rock Township, Mitchell County, Iowa and later moved to a farm in Cedar Township, where Mr. Schoger died on August 22, 1884. The following children were born to them: Cornelia Andrena, Cornelius Edward, Henry Julius, Oscar Anton, and Ella Augustine (Mrs. Syver Klemesrud), the only surviving child of this marriage.

On December 25, 1886, she was married to Ole I. Dahley and they located on the farm in Cedar Township where they continued to live until moving to Nora Springs, Iowa, in 1912.

In her second marriage the following children were born: Ira William of Denver, Colorado; Elmer O. of this community; Adella E. Norby of Nora Springs, Iowa; and Cora Emilia who died in infancy.

Besides her husband and living children, fourteen grandchildren and eighteen great-grandchildren survive her.

Last Rites for Mrs. O.I. Dahley Read Monday

Pioneer Woman Laid to Rest at Rock Creek

Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at the Rock Creek Lutheran Church for Mrs. Ole Dahley, Nora Springs. Mrs. Dahley, 86, died Friday at her home. Internment was made at the Rock Creek Cemetery, last rites being conducted by the Rev. O.C. Myhre.

Mrs. Ellen R. Dahley was born on a farm near Mitchell, December 9, 1854. The only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ingebret Knudsen, she grew to womanhood in her parent’s home and received her education in the rural schools. Mrs. Dahley was baptized and confirmed by the pioneer pastor C. L. Clausen of St. Ansgar.

Marries John F. Shoger

Ellen Knudsen became Mrs. John F. Shoger on May 18, 1871. Immediately after the wedding, they located on their farm in Rock township, Mitchell county. Children of this marriage were: Cornelia, Cornelius, Henry, Oscar, and Mrs. S.K. Klemesrud - the only one living. Mr. Shoger died in 1884.

To Nora Springs in 1912

After her marriage to O.I. Dahley on Christmas Day 1886, the couple moved to his farm in Cedar township, Mitchell county where they lived until 1912. It was then that Nora Springs was made their home. Mrs. Dahley has been an active member of the local Lutheran church and attended as long as her health permitted. She was an exceptionally healthy woman until about a year ago, when her vitality began to fail her. She became seriously ill two months ago.

Many Survivors

Surviving are her husband; two sons, Ira of Denver and Elmer of this community; two daughters, Mrs. Adella Norby of Nora Springs and Mrs. S.K. Klemesrud. Besides the husband and fore mentioned children, there are nine nieces, four nephews, 14 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren.

Casket Bearers

Casket bearers were James Shoger, Kinley Klemesrud, Sidney Norby, Erling Dahley, Stanley Klemesrud and Donald Norby. Mrs. O.C. Myhre and Stanley Klemesrud sang, “Asleep In Jesus”, “Blessed Sleep”, “Nearer My God to Thee” and “Abide By Me”, accompanied by Mrs. Lawrence Olson.

Relatives Attend

Relatives and friends from out of town who attended the services included Mrs. Guy Savage, Mr. and Mrs. Merrill Thuirer, Arthur Knudson and Mrs. Emma Knudson, all of Spencer; the Misses Lottie and Nellie Knudson, Mrs. Vina Dahley and Mrs. Clara Nelson, all of Osage; Sidney Norby and Miss Jennie Hanson of Rochester, Minn.; and Mr. and Mrs. William Oleson of Webster City.
