Burial will be in Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery, St. Ansgar. Friends may call 4-8 p.m., Friday, November 19, at the Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home in St. Ansgar, and one hour before services at the church on Saturday, November 20.
Dorothy Marie Anna was born March 10, 1923, to Grover and Dora (Eske) Halverson in St. Ansgar, where she lived her entire life. She was the oldest of three children. She attended and graduated from St. Ansgar Public School.
On August 5, 1951, she was united in marriage to James William (Bill) Hegland. To this union six children were born.
During her high school years, Dorothy worked at the local newspaper as a typesetter to help support her family due to a serious accident that her father was involved in. After graduation she continued to work at the newspaper until she became employed at St. Ansgar State Bank. She was employed there as a bookkeeper/computer operator until 2009 when health concerns forced her retirement. She was extremely proud of the fact that she was able to work full time until the age of 86.
Dorothy's entire life was centered on family. She cherished the time she spent with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She enjoyed attending any event they participated in whether it involved school, church or home. Many miles were driven to attend activities in St. Michael, Hastings, Cedar Rapids, Cedar Falls and Forest City.
Dorothy was especially proud of the fact that she was able to see each of her grandchildren graduate from high school and many of them from college.
Dorothy was actively involved with the local Boy Scouts. She was the first female in Iowa to be presented the "Silver Fawn" award, the highest female honor in Boy Scouting. She was very proud of the fact that all of her sons became Eagle Scouts, along with numerous other young men in the community.
Dorothy was well known throughout the area for her cake decorating talent. She started by making her own wedding cake and over the years made wedding cakes for her children, all of her married grandchildren and numerous friends and relatives throughout the area. She loved furnishing cakes for local athletic celebrations and fund raisers.
She and her husband, Bill, were avid sports fans. They followed the athletic careers of both their children and grandchildren religiously. It was not uncommon to see their faces in the crowd at Saints athletic events or manning the "chuckwagon" at track meets, handing out goodies to the Saints athletes, a tradition she carried out until their last grandson graduated. She was also more than willing to help out and share advice with officials when it was needed. She was known as Grandma to many Saints athletes. She was extremely proud of the fact that she was inducted into the Saint Ansgar Booster Club Hall of Fame.
In recent years she was able to travel extensively to watch the UNI Panther football team, the Waldorf girls' basketball and softball teams, and the Seattle Seahawks and Dallas Cowboys. Sitting on the 50-yardline at Super Bowl XL, cheering her grandson on, was a cherished memory.
Dorothy is survived by her six children, Mary Lowana (Paul) Hannam of St. Ansgar, Michael (Marian) Hegland of Cedar Rapids, David (Jane) Hegland of St. Michael, Minn., Timothy (LaVonne) Hegland of St. Michael, Minn., Becky Hegland of St. Ansgar, and James (Linda) Hegland of Hastings, Minn.
She is also survived by her 16 grandchildren, Robyn (Mitch) Huddle, Ryan (April) Hannam, Ross (Megan) Hannam, Rachel Hannam, Reid Hannam, Joseph (Alison) Hegland, Samuel (Hayley) Hegland, Matthew (Christan Shulstad) Hegland, Kevin (fiancée, Laura Hansen) Hegland, Steven (Megan Peterson) Hegland, Stacy Hegland, Bryan (Megan Dooley) Hegland, Marcus Hegland, Lucas Hegland, Craig (Tracy Sieben) Hegland and Megan (Dan Richter) Hegland. Also great-grandchildren, Grace Hannam, Sophia Hegland, Jenna Hannam and Taylor Huddle; sister and brother-in-law, Janis and Susan Blumentals; and brother-in-law Wayne Rasmus.
